Plantworks Rootgrow Mycorrhizal Fungi Review

Mycos, also called fungus roots or mycorrhizal fungi, grow in soil and develop a secondary root network that helps plants take in more nutrients and water. While mycos occur naturally in soil, various factors like pesticides or lack of plants in an area can affect their formation.

So adding mycorrhizal fungi to your garden or pots will help your plants grow and thrive. You can do this using the Plantworks Rootgrow Mycorrhizal Fungi. Read on for my full review.

What Are You Buying?

1. 360g Mycorrhizal Fungi

You don’t need a lot of mycorrhizal fungi to help your plants grow. A teaspoon per plant is enough. So this 360g Plantworks Rootgrow mix is plenty for a backyard garden.

The packet is enough for about 100 plug plants or 30-50 small to medium size pots. If you are adding the mix to large pots, the manufacturer recommends dividing a single packet among twenty 2-3 litre pots, seven 10-15 litre pots and two 60-80 litre pots.

The packet comes complete with a small measuring spoon for easy and precise application.

2. Natural Fertiliser Suitable for Most Plants

Mycorrhizal fungi is not just any other fertiliser or plant food. It’s actually a pretty big deal for plant life on earth.

Almost all plants rely on mycorrhizal fungi for growth. Mycos have been around for hundreds of millions of years and they have been crucial in the survival of plant life, especially in harsh climates.

You can think of the Plantworks Rootgrow mix as a natural fertiliser. As the fungi attaches to the plant roots and develops a secondary, more expansive, root network, it helps bring nutrients and water to the plant. Rootgrow is especially important for the uptake of phosphorus, zinc, manganese, nitrogen and copper.

Rootgrow is safe to use on a wide range of plants including trees, shrubs, flowers and edible plants like beans, tomatoes, fruit trees and more.

Rootgrow is especially ideal for plants in nutrient-poor conditions such as those in pots. It can also help plants tolerate drought conditions by increasing water uptake.

Other benefits include faster growth of established plants, increased yield from edibles, better flowering, and improved disease resistance.

3. Fast Growing Fungi

Once you apply Plantworks Rootgrow to your plants, it starts its work almost immediately. The fungi grows root-like structures that attach to plant roots. This allows exchange of water and nutrients (the fungi get sugar from the plants).

The fungi then spreads its network of structures far into the soil to bring in more nutrients.

In just four weeks, a secondary root network will have developed around your plants. So you should start seeing the benefits of Rootgrow within weeks. Your plants will look healthier, fruit plants will have better yields and you’ll also likely get fewer diseased plants.

If you plant your flowers or trees without adding Rootgrow, they’ll still eventually link up with mycos occurring naturally in the soil. But this can take up to two years. What Rootgrow does is allow your plants to benefit from these beneficial fungi much faster.

How Easy Is It To Use?

The Plantworks Rootgrow mycorrhizal fungi mix is really easy to use. The most important thing to remember is that direct contact with roots is essential. It allows the fungi to find the roots much quicker.

Usage directions recommend digging a hole and adding the mycorrhizal fungi granules into the hole. Then place the plant on top of the granules and cover with soil.

If you are adding mycorrhizal fungi to established plants, add the granules around the base of the plant and mix well into the soil. Water the plants well.

What Accessories Are Included?

Inside the packet of Plantworks Rootgrow mycorrhizal fungi, you will find a 10ml measuring scoop that makes it easy to portion out the right amount of granules per plant.

Pros

  • Beneficial for most plants.
  • Helps plants resist drought and disease.
  • Increases plant growth, vigour and yield.
  • Easy to use.

Cons

  • Can be pricey if you plan to use it in a large garden. You’ll need several packets.

Anything Else You Should Know?

Almost all plants have a symbiotic relationship with mycorrhizal fungi. Emphasis on almost.

That’s because there are a few plants that do not respond to mycos and it would be pointless to use Plantworks Rootgrow on them. These include Brassicas (broccoli, cabbage, brussel sprouts etc.), rhododendrons, beets, blueberries, Azaleas and Heathers.

For these plants, you need different kinds of mycorrhizal fungi. The manufacturer recommends Rootgrow ericoid which contains a mix of ericoid and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi that’s suitable for acid-loving plants like blueberries and rhododendrons.

Conclusion

One of the great things about Plantworks Rootgrow mycorrhizal fungi is that it is completely natural and safe for your plants and the environment.

Unlike many synthetic fertilisers, there’s nothing like too much mycorrhizal fungi. You will not kill your plants or risk polluting the soil and water bodies. You can even use it in organic farming.

The only downside is that it can get pricey especially for large gardens or if you have lots of large pots. But the benefits to plants are worth it.
