Barrettine PTGB005 5 L Wood Protective Treatment Review
What Are You Buying?
1. Wood Sealer for Treated Exterior Wood
The Barrettine wood protective treatment is ideal for application on treated wood, including tanalised or pressure-treated wood. If you have untreated wood, the Barrettine wood preserver is a better option. You can then maintain the timber using the wood protective treatment.
2. Water-repellent Wood Sealer
The Barrettine wood protective treatment is rich in resins that coat the surface of the wood and repel moisture. Once it dries, you’ll notice that water beads and flows off the wood instead of soaking into it.
The wood sealer protects timber structures from decay, rotting, swelling, and warping caused by water. Moisture protection from the Barrettine wood treatment lasts about 6 months, after which you should re-apply the sealer.
3. Fade-Resistant Wood Stain
Moisture is not the only enemy to wood. Exterior structures fade and discolour over time due to constant exposure to UV.
The Barrettine wood protective treatment contains a coloured stain that keeps out UV and retains the luster and look of your timber structure for a long time. Re-apply every 6-12 months to prevent fading.
4. Biocidal Surface Film Preserver for Mold and Algae Protection
In addition to moisture and UV protection, the Barrettine wood protective treatment also protects timber from surface mold and algae.
Mold and algae on wood is not just an aesthetic issue; it can cause decay and threaten the structural integrity of the structure. Instead of having to constantly scrub or spray mold off the wood, apply the Barrettine wood sealer and it’ll keep the surface clear.
5. Harmless to Beneficial Plants & Insects
Once the sealer dries, it is safe for beneficial insects and plants, so you can apply it on outdoor timber structures without worrying about endangering bees, butterflies, or plants in your garden.
How Easy Is It To Apply the Barrettine Wood Protective Sealer?
You don’t need to hire a pro to apply the Barrettine wood sealer. It is safe and easy to apply on your own with basic equipment.
You can use an airless paint sprayer, paint brush, or roller to apply the sealer. Prep the timber before application. Make sure it’s dry, free of any paints or coatings (sand it down if necessary), and doesn’t have any mold or algae growing on it.
If the wood is already infested with mold, Barettine recommends using a biocidal wash before applying the treatment.
The recommended coverage is 180ml per square meter, or about 5-6 square meters per litre of the wood protective treatment. Apply 2-3 coats with a 12-hour drying time between layers.
The Barrettine protective treatment penetrates deep into the wood, ensuring protection beyond the surface. While the stain has a golden brown colour, the finish is translucent, ensuring the wood grain is still visible.
One thing to keep in mind is that you cannot apply a paint or another stain on top of the Barrettine wood protective treatment. That’s because it contains wax, which doesn’t provide a good adhesive surface for other coatings to stick on. If you paint over it, the paint will likely start to peel off after some time.
What Accessories are Included?
The Barrettine wood protective treatment doesn’t come with any accessories. You’ll need a brush, roller, or sprayer to apply it.
Depending on the state of the timber surface, you may also need additional materials like sand paper, paint remover, or biocidal wash to prepare the wood for the sealer.
Pros
- Protects against moisture, mold, algae, and UV.
- Easy to apply.
- Long-lasting protection.
- Safe for plants and insects.
Cons
- Not suitable for use on floors, decking, or garden furniture as it does not protect against scuffs and scratches.
Anything Else You Should Know?
Barrettine sells three main types of wood protective products: the wood protective treatment that we’ve reviewed, a wood preserver, and a universal preserver.
The Barrettine wood preserver is the most expensive option. Use it if you have untreated wood or wood that’s been exposed to the elements for years and you want to restore it.
The wood preserver provides protection that’s equivalent to tanalised or pressure-treated wood. Its protection lasts 5-10 years.
If you have pre-treated timber, the wood protective treatment that we’ve discussed in this review is the best option.
The universal preserver only protects against biological attacks from insects, mold, algae, and rot-causing fungi. It doesn’t have any wax in it, making it the best option if you want to add a coat of paint or stain on the wood.
Conclusion
The Barrettine wood protective treatment makes it easy to keep wood surfaces and structures looking good for years. It combines moisture resistance, mold and algae protection, and anti-fade protection in one easy-to-apply product.
